Regina was born on May 14th, 2010. I got her when she was 4 months old. At 4 months, she was already 550 grams, and the breeder had her on a special diet because she was already a big girl. According to her breeder, she liked to steal food from her siblings.

She gained a bit of weight as she got older, and was about 750 grams in February of 2012. It is important to note: she was still able to completely ball up at this weight, indicating that 750 grams was still a healthy weight for her.

Her activity level started to decline around the end of 2011, and I noticed some discharge from her lady parts, so we went to her fantastic vet, who determined that she had some possibly pre-cancerous cells in her uterus, and suggested that we spay her. So, Regina was spayed in February of 2012.

After she was spayed, she stopped using her wheel completely, and began gaining weight. I discussed it with her vet, who informed me that it is not uncommon for animals to decrease activity and gain weight after being spayed, due to hormonal changes.

Yes, I am aware that Regina is fat, and while it is cute, it is not healthy. I have started introducing her to the water more to encourage swimming as an exercise (she’s not a fan, though). She eats one tablespoon per day of a high quality, low fat cat food. Occasionally, she gets crickets as treats. I cannot force her to exercise, although I do encourage it, through activities like baths and digging in her blankets.

Other than her weight issue, she is a happy, healthy girl! She gets regular vet checkups, and daily snuggles from her mama.

  1. I am so happy that Regina has a momma like you! I have 2 male hedgehogs myself and am often called the crazy hedgehog lady because I deeply care for them both. Its always amazing to read other hedgie owners stories and Regina has quite the story to tell!

I admire your compassion for her :)
